Sustainable warehouse on a large scale

The Swedish DIY chain Jula recently had its central warehouse in Skara expanded to become the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. Large-format Hebel and Ytong elements were used in the process.

A total of 3,700 m² of new external wall made of autoclaved aerated concrete was installed during the expansion of the Jula central warehouse. This means that the warehouse, with a total expanse of 175,000 square meters, has now advanced to become the largest warehouse in Northern Europe. Since 2005, Jula's central warehouse in Skara in the south of Sweden has been repeatedly expanded and rebuilt. The current work is the fifth expansion of the warehouse.

General contractor PEAB and client Jula set high targets for the time frame of completion. 150 square meters were to be installed per day - a challenge for which large-format building elements are ideally suited. And so Xella Sweden supplied Hebel and Ytong wall elements, thanks to which the target could even be exceeded up to 300 square meters installed per day.
 

The products: Not only quick to install, but also sustainable

When it came to the building materials used, it was particularly important to both PEAB and Jula to use products that corresponded to their vision of sustainability. Xella products were already used in a previous extension of the same hall. For this reason, the choice again fell on exterior walls made of Ytong AAC and Hebel wall elements. Due to their heat-insulating properties, the building elements make their contribution to a sustainable building.

Lennart Karlsson, CEO of Jula Logistics, explains: "We always try to find climate-friendly solutions, from construction to the energy consumption of the finished building. The autoclaved aerated concrete from Xella Sweden comes from right next to the construction project, guaranteeing environmentally friendly, short transport routes. In addition, we also know and appreciate the sustainable product properties from the earlier construction phases, which is why the AAC elements from Xella are a perfect fit. We are very satisfied with the result after this fifth stage."
