Xella's international cooperation for Finland's tallest tower

The new factory tower being built by Prysmian, the world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, near Helsinki in Finland is a shining example of European cooperation within the Xella Group.

05 December, 2024

The new cable tower in Kirkkonummi, 35 kilometers from the capital city Helsinki, is already the tallest building in Finland. As part of the Pikkala factory, the building is to become a production facility for extruded high-voltage submarine cables. High-voltage submarine cables are needed around the world to transmit power from green transition investments such as offshore wind farms.

Xella Sweden was choosen as supplier when the client were looking for an alternative ventilated internal insulation and showed interest in the advantages of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) for this purpose. In addition to product management, material calculation and delivery, it soon became clear that the involvement of several Xella companies was a clear market advantage over other possible suppliers:

"With our specialized know-how, a project of this size was a great opportunity to combine the strengths of many individual companies," says Ben Birouti, Head of Country Operations at Xella Scandinavia. And the many internal meetings ultimately paid off, as Birouti continues: "For me, the signed contract was proof of the success of our many well-thought-out agreements between the companies involved!"

One group, many skills and excellent cooperation

The result is one of the largest European multi-million-euro projects in Xella's history. In addition to the client Prysmian, the general contractor YIT Finland and the general engineering company Ramboll, the following areas of expertise within the Xella Group were involved in this project:

  • Our research department, Xella Technologie & Forschungsgesellschaft GmbH, recommended Multipor for the project based on the climatic conditions inside and outside the building.
  • International Product Management, who specified the project based on information from Ramboll.
  • Xella Sweden for organization, sales, and distribution
  • Xella Germany for technical project support, on-site training, demonstrating. and manufacturing Multipor insulation.
  • DASBA Cutting service (Xella Czech Republic)
  • Ytong Tool Shop (Xella Germany) with direct on-site tool supply.

"In this project, we have once again demonstrated our many years of experience with internal insulation, our calculation expertise and our smooth cooperation with other companies," says Markus Hesse, Head of International Product Management.

Experienced on-site support

On this project Xella acted as both consultant and supplier with the perfect internal and external insulation with Multipor for the Pikkala plant. Xella Sweden started delivering the material in December 2023. The internal insulation with 12,000 m2 of Multipor products from the base to the top of the tower was due summer of 2024. Until then, Xella Sweden will continue to be involved with regular site visits to monitor the ongoing work.
