The new “San Cataldo” hospital in Taranto will comprise 70 outpatient clinics, 28 diagnostic rooms, 19 surgery rooms and 715 beds. This is a total of 160,000 square meters of covered space distributed over six blocks of buildings and two parking lots with a total of 2,500 parking spaces. The huge area will also house internal roads and a public park, which alone covers an area of more than 80,000 square meters.
A “hospital city” made of Ytong
In Italy, the largest and most modern hospital in Apulia is currently being built on a total area of 26 hectares. Ytong autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is being used for this project.
Impressions from the construction site
Fast construction, high insulation performance
Single-layer autoclaved aerated concrete masonry from Ytong was chosen for the exterior walls of the hospital buildings because of its high insulating performance and because it is quick to install and easy to work with.
The optimal thermal insulation and fire resistance, as well as the fact that no further insulating material is required, led the contractor Società Consortile O.S.C. Taranto Scarl to choose the Ytong system over drywall systems. And so Ytong Climagold, Climaplus and Thermo blocks with a total volume of 14,000 cubic meters are now being installed.
Modern building with “antique” details
Special attention was paid to the architectural concept of the new building. For example, the administrative wing also serves as a roof for the main entrance. This is supported by six columns, which represent a modern interpretation of the ancient Doric columns in the historic center of Taranto. Compact and symmetrical architectural forms and materials such as ceramics, local stone, plaster, and steel were used for the facades.
The completion is scheduled for the end of the year.
