When tradition meets modernity

The “Church of Christ the Savior” in Prague's Barrandov district is a new landmark in the Czech capital. Xella CZ was able to meet the requirements for interior insulation with Multipor as the ideal solution.

In Prague, century-old traditions meet modern approaches: The “Church of Christ the Saviour” in the district of Barrandov is not only for the faithful but also a community center and meeting place for members of all cultures. Equipped with a hall, club rooms and a café, the location can host a range of events such as concerts, discussions, lectures, or exhibitions. There is also a library, as well as a children's corner and an adjacent playground. The minimalistic design of simple geometric shapes with a white facade by architects Jakub Žiška and Pavel Šmelhaus fits perfectly into the modern neighborhood mainly formed by prefabricated houses.
 
 
Finding the perfect insulating solution with Multipor
As external insulation was not possible for the building, the construction team looked for an optimal internal insulation system. Xella offered a fitting solution by supplying Multipor mineral insulation boards and Multipor light mortar. Most importantly they meet the strictest requirements for modern insulation solutions in regard to sound and thermal insulation, water absorption and non-flammability. The constructor Metrostav a.s also praised the simplicity of installation. With this solution, it was possible to save time, as well as reduce the overall amount of material consumed. Thus, no additional costs occurred through additional material as would be the case with some other implementations. The Multipor products were used in the café of the building, as well as the entire entrance portal of the Church.
 
 
 Support in design and construction
“A key point is to find the optimal required thermal properties to reduce the energy intensity of the building, while not affecting the existing structure in terms of moisture,” says Jan Tinka, Key Project Manager of Xella CZ. Multipor boards must be glued to a level surface, so some treatments had to be applied to certain areas of the building. Lightweight Multipor mortar was used for core plasters, while attention had to be paid to details such as the linings, windows, and transverse load-bearing structure. For these challenges, Xella assisted on the construction site. An application technician from Xella performed on-site staff training and helped with the technical procedures. Xella was therefore not only a partner in the design, but also during construction.
