Nestled in the idyllic village of Pentenried, just a stone's throw from Munich, lies the remnants of a once-vibrant grain and potato distillery. Since 1901, this establishment has been a cornerstone of the local community, its towering chimney serving as a proud symbol of industry and tradition. However, with changing times and economic shifts, the distillery fell into disuse in 2013, its buildings standing silent and forgotten. Then, in 2020, a bold revitalization project that would not only restore the distillery to its former glory but also transform it into a vibrant hub of activity and innovation was started. Teaming up with architect Cornelius Dier, industrial designer and project leader Andreas Krause started a journey marked by determination, creativity, and unwavering dedication. Their vision was clear: to seamlessly blend the distillery's historic charm with modern amenities and sustainable design principles. This ambitious undertaking would require meticulous planning, resourcefulness, and a deep respect for the site's heritage.
Preservation and vision with AAC
Years of neglect had taken their toll on the distillery, leaving it in a state of disrepair. Structural issues, decayed materials, and environmental concerns posed significant obstacles to overcome. Yet, fueled by passion for preservation and innovation, the renovation plan continued. Dividing the project into distinct phases – original restoration, link construction, and new development – allowed them to carefully balance preservation with progress. Every decision was made with careful consideration for the site's historical significance and the surrounding community's needs.
One of the project's defining features was the use of Ytong autoclaved aerated concrete. Recognized for its versatility, sustainability, and thermal properties, Ytong provided an ideal solution for the distillery's expansion and modernization efforts. Its lightweight nature and ease of installation made it the perfect choice for the new hall extension, seamlessly integrating with the existing structures while enhancing energy efficiency and durability. Xella also assisted in the use in consultative function.
Today, the distillery stands as a testament to the power of preservation and vision. Its revitalized spaces now house a vibrant mix of residential, commercial, and cultural activities, serving as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. As Pentenried's beloved landmark once again takes its place at the heart of the village, it serves as a reminder of the past, a celebration of the present, and a promise for the future.
