Although it looks very simple at the first glance, the Jurkovič Heating Plant combines elements of various architectural styles, including art nouveau, modernism, and functionalism. Because of this, among other things, it is classified as a national cultural monument. Therefore, the Multipor mineral thermal insulation boards were a perfect solution, as they are used internally, and the exterior of the building can be preserved exactly as it is.
Historic Heating Plant gets insulated with Multipor
With an extensive renovation, the Jurkovič Heating Plant also needed new insulating properties. As external insulation is mostly not an option for historic buildings, the Multipor mineral thermal insulation boards saved the day for the renovation team in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Part of a new area and era
The heating plant is part of the SKY PARK multifunctional complex in the center of Bratislava. It is located in a former industrial zone that got modernized over the years by several real estate projects. The renovation of the heating plant is part of the Penta Real Estate project which also includes four residential towers, two office buildings, and a new multifunctional public park designed by architect Zaha Hadid. The Jurkovič Heating Plant will become its cultural epicenter and a valuable contrast to the modern architecture of the new surrounding buildings. The reconstruction started in 2018 and the plant is planned to open at the end of 2021.
Zsolt Straňák of 3S – projekt s.r.o., managing director of the thermal engineering project, explains why Multipor was the first choice: “The primary task rested in ensuring thermal comfort for the designed workplaces – offices and for short-term stay areas, such as a restaurant and a café with a gallery. The insulation will also significantly reduce the overall heat demand, saving energy on heating and being more ecofriendly. Thermal insulation from the interior side came into consideration as the only rational solution, even though it is not a typical one. For the architects to still have freedom in creating the interior, we chose interior insulation implementing Multipor mineral thermal insulation boards, as they come with great flexibility. Their features and advantages could be fully applied here.”
