Certified sustainability: New gym for elementary school in Desio

In the Milan suburb of Desio, a new gymnasium was built for the "Umberto Tagliabue" elementary school. Partly due to the Ytong products used, the facility was awarded for its quality and energy efficiency by the South Tyrolean company KlimaHaus.

04 November, 2022

The "Umberto Tagliabue" elementary school is located just over 10 kilometers from Milan, in the city center of Desio, a small suburb of Milan and Monza with a population of just over 40,000. For a long time an outdated hall stood here , no longer suitable for use as a gym and, moreover, built with construction materials containing asbestos. So it was time for a restart. Not only for the elementary school, but also for the surrounding area. After all, the hall is designed for school lessons as well as for public use. In the course of the work on the gymnasium, which is directly connected to and accessible from the school building via the associated changing rooms, minor maintenance and adaptation work was also carried out on the main building.

The advantage of Ytong products for sustainable construction

Ytong products were used in particular in the area of the locker rooms that connect the gymnasium to the school building. Due to the thermal insulating properties of Ytong blocks, the clever composition of the building with prefabricated components and an extensive green roof, KlimaHaus Class A certification was achieved. KlimaHaus was developed as a project to focus on energy-efficient and sustainable construction and to make requirements for this type of construction transparent. For consumers, this ultimately means lower energy costs and for the environment, lower pollutant and CO2 emissions - in other words, a win-win situation.
In addition to the ecological aspects, the architectural office Roccatelier also decided to use Ytong because of its excellent workability, easy handling due to its low weight, quick laying and high quality. In addition, there are excellent fire protection and sound insulation values.
