Tuzla plant commissions rooftop solar power system

The Tuzla plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina has successfully installed and commissioned a rooftop solar power system. This marks an important step toward reducing CO₂ emissions and ensuring a more sustainable energy supply at the site.

01 July, 2025

To reduce CO₂ emissions across the Xella Group, one of our main tasks is to make our production processes more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The use of photovoltaic systems to supply green electricity for production plays a key role in this effort. With this in mind, the team at Tuzla plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by Plant Manager Denis Mostarlić and Project Manager Dejan Turk, started the implementation of a solar power system.

Despite regulatory uncertainties, the team successfully advanced the project by partnering with Resalta, a specialist in renewable energy. Close coordination with authorities and strict adherence to EHS standards ensured all necessary permits and structural modifications were completed smoothly.

CO₂ emissions are reduced

The new system is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 303 tonnes per year, based on the 2022 CO₂e factor and projected annual output. It will also provide long-term cost benefits.

The Tuzla plant is one of the first industrial facilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to implement a rooftop solar system of this kind. "I am very proud that the entire team showed great commitment and energy in implementing this project. I hope that other plants will follow this path and that together we will reduce further CO₂ emissions across the group," says Head of plant Denis Mostarlić.

By completing this project, the Tuzla plant reinforces its commitment to sustainable operations and contributes to the company’s broader decarbonization efforts.

Tuzla plant joins a growing number of Xella sites that are already harnessing the power of the sun: Xella relies on renewable energy from photovoltaic systems at a wide range of locations across Europe. Learn more about our successful solar systems in Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Serbia.
