Marko, your father used to work for Xella - how did you get involved? To what extent did he influence your decision to also work for Xella?
I was exposed to the world of construction through my father's work since I was a small child. We used to visit construction sites, support stands at the annual construction fairs, and I actively participated in his hobby building projects with Ytong materials. In this way, my father gave me a hands-on introduction to the industry.
Joining Xella was a natural choice for me, not only because of my family connection, but also because of the company's values, the emphasis on teamwork, the wealth of knowledge among colleagues, and the opportunity to interact with diverse performers in dynamic working environments across the country.
You work as a building instructor at Xella Srbija, just like your father did. How has the job changed since then?
In the early years, the focus was on familiarizing the market with our materials and promoting new products. In the last 15 years, we have added the tasks of developing larger projects and actively participating in the execution of substantial and impressive construction projects.
What skills do you need for your job?
To excel as a building instructor, a comprehensive understanding of the entire construction process is critical. I also believe that practical construction experience, familiarity with Ytong materials, and the ability to work on projects of varying sizes are essential.
Is there a current project that you have enjoyed?
One of the most interesting projects I've worked on recently was the Plot 23 project on the Belgrade waterfront. Winning this project was not only challenging but also extremely rewarding. The main challenge was to meet the unique architectural specifications while ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety. We put a lot of effort into finding innovative solutions and conducted numerous demonstrations and tests before arriving at the final solution. This involved pioneering new methods of applying and using Ytong blocks on the building façade, introducing new block dimensions and adopting a new approach to construction.
I'm proud to say that my team and I successfully positioned and integrated all of the company's building materials - Ytong, Silka, and Multipor - on this colossal construction site, one of the largest in the country. For me, this project pushed the boundaries of innovation.
What are the next steps?
My father's dedication, expertise, and passion for the industry have instilled in me a deep sense of commitment and professionalism. Looking ahead, I would like to be involved in new and innovative projects. If given the opportunity, I would like to take on a leadership role, overseeing the expansion of the team and contributing to Xella's growth and success in new and challenging ventures.
What does safety mean to you and your job?
Safety is paramount in our industry. Ensuring that all team members adhere to strict safety protocols, using proper personal protective equipment and conducting comprehensive risk assessments are non-negotiable aspects of our approach at every stage of the construction process on every project.
What does sustainability mean to you and your work?
We contribute to sustainability by using environmentally friendly materials such as Ytong, Silka and Multipor, and by promoting energy-efficient construction methods. In addition, we actively look for ways to minimize waste and environmental impact, ensuring that our projects are in line with Xella's commitment to sustainable building practices, as it was the case in Plot 23 in Belgrade.
How do you unwind after work?
To unwind, I prioritize quality time with family and friends. Escaping to my family's countryside home provides a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of work. Riding my motorcycle is not just a hobby, but a source of inspiration and relaxation, that allows me to clear my mind and return to work with renewed energy.
