How Xella is taking up the fight against CO2 emissions

The construction and building industry is responsible for nearly 40 percent of global CO2 emissions. At Xella, we've made it our mission to change that. In 2021, we took a few steps forward.

13 June, 2022

By 2030, Xella aims to reduce CO2 emissions intensity by 30 percent. Last year was a good year in this respect: We came another step closer to our goal. This year alone, we reduced CO2 intensity by 6.6 percent vs 2019. This mainly related to Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. We also saved 7,700 metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2021 in the two business units (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) through investment projects. But we are not resting.

Excellent conditions: our products

We are proud that our products have very good properties: They are almost fully recyclable and can even absorb CO2. But we are not resting. We are aware that our products currently rely on CO2-intensive raw materials such as cement or lime. We want to use these raw materials as efficiently as possible and are working to establish a circular economy for our products. Our goal is to no longer landfill residues from the production of autoclaved aerated concrete and calcium silicate blocks.

Promoting and driving innovation

At the same time, we are not only developing our products further, but are also working with our technology and research company, Technologie- und Forschungsgesellschaft mbH, on new formulas, new products and researching innovations in the building materials sector using low-CO2 alternatives as raw materials. We know that it may be some time before we can develop building materials that do not use highly emitting substances such as cement or lime. > Read more about our research

Sustainable supply chain
We have an extensive production network to ensure we are close to our customers and as efficient as possible. Therefore, we use local supply chains and build a highly resilient value chain. This enables us to reduce CO2 emissions through short transport distances, be part of the local economy and develop supply structures together with preferred local suppliers.

Action plans for the coming years

We have our sights firmly set on our goal: Xella wants to deliver sustainable solutions for the construction industry. For us, taking the fight against climate change seriously means reducing CO2 emissions in absolute terms. Our goal is that by the end of the year, we will not only have defined targets for most of the issues, but also have action plans ready on how we intend to achieve them.
The fight against climate change is a challenge for us at Xella, for the entire construction industry, for all of us. We want our strategy to have a positive impact - and not just locally, but globally.
