Empowering Rural Education: transforming Schools in Romania

In partnership with the Bookland Association, Xella has embarked on a journey of transformation aimed at reshaping the educational landscape in rural Romania. Our mission is clear: to combat school drop-outs in remote areas by providing pupils with access to high-quality education in a safe, modern, and stimulating environment, thereby fostering sustainable communities for the future.

Rural children face unique challenges that often go unnoticed. These students understand the weight of responsibility from a young age, experiencing hardships that city-dwelling counterparts may never encounter. For them, school represents more than just a place of learning.

Recognizing the disparity between urban and rural educational facilities, the Bookland Association has made it their mission to revitalize dilapidated schools, ensuring they are not only structurally sound but also warm, inviting, and conducive to learning. Through our collaborative efforts, we have started the renovation and construction of school buildings and annexes across several regions throughout the country, including:

1. Secondary School "Constatin Moscu" in Bacau County
2. "George Tofan" Secondary School and Kindergarten in Botosani County
3. Costesti Secondary School in Buzau County
4. Moglanesti Primary School and Kindergarten in Harghita County

Our commitment to these projects extends beyond mere refurbishment. We understand the importance of utilizing sustainable materials that not only enhance the physical infrastructure but also contribute to long-term environmental preservation. To this end, we donated our Ytong and Macon masonry materials and adhesive to three of the schools, ensuring sustainability, efficiency and environmental friendliness in our construction practices.

By investing in the renovation and modernization of rural schools, we are not only providing students with a conducive learning environment but also empowering entire communities. Education serves as the cornerstone of progress, offering pathways to economic stability, social mobility, and cultural enrichment. Through our collective efforts, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future for generations to come.
