Historic London shopping center modernized

The Whiteleys shopping gallery in London's Bayswater district has an impressive history: Around 100 years ago, the building complex was once considered the "largest shopping center in the world". Now it is the scene of one of the most impressive renovation projects in the whole of Europe, in which insulation materials from URSA are being used.

The former shopping arcade is located in one of the most influential areas of the City of London, at the northern end of Queensway. Here, the center had been struggling with increasing competition since the late 2000s, which is why it closed in 2018. A massive 1 billion pound renovation project has now been underway since 2019, transforming the building into a modern residential, hotel, restaurant and retail complex covering more than 90,000 square feet.

Designed by architects Foster and Partners and overseen by construction and engineering firm Laing O'Rourke, the project includes 139 luxury apartments and townhouses with one to five bedrooms, 20 luxury stores and restaurants, and 110 hotel rooms from luxury hotel and spa chain Six Senses. Prices for the apartments start at around 1.5 million pounds - for which you then also get your own spa, pool and exclusive communal workspace.

Despite all the modernization, the work will still take care to preserve iconic building features such as the façade and dome, as well as the central courtyard, which will be carefully restored, as will the historic interior staircase that will form the centerpiece of the hotel's first floor.

To ensure the right indoor climate in the luxurious facilities, insulation materials from URSA will be used during the renovation work. URSA CAVITY BATT, a semi-rigid partition board made of glass wool treated with water-repellent additives, and URSA mineral glass wool will provide first-class thermal and acoustic insulation.
Completion of the huge project is scheduled for 2023.
