Meet today… Jure Lovšin
What makes the Slovenian market unique? Since last year, Jure Lovšin has been putting his passion for civil engineering to good use as a product manager for our Xella brands, which has enabled him to acquire a wealth of knowledge.
Can you tell us about your journey to become a product manager for building and insulation materials? What drew you to this field?
My whole family was in civil engineering, so it basically has always been a part of my life. I studied in Ljubljana and planned to enter the construction sector. After a short stint in the automotive industry, I eventually joined Xella and returned to my initial plans. Building physics has always been interesting to me. Initially, I focused on insulation materials, then on building materials. In this regard, Ytong was particularly interesting for me due to its thermal properties.
What are your key tasks? What do you do every day as a product manager?
My main tasks involve collaborating with architects and investors, providing product information, technical support, and documentation. Since Ytong is still not fully adopted in Slovenia, a significant part of my job is to inform and educate people about the product. This involves participating in events and conferences with professionals and universities. I also work closely with marketing and sales, supporting them with technical expertise, preparing offers with products that fit the project plan, and determining the necessary quantities.
When you attend events as a speaker, do you use these opportunities to bring certain messages across? If so, which are those?
These events generally help with brand recognition. The main characteristics we highlight include thermal properties, energy efficiency, and providing a good indoor climate for customers. In events like the ARHIKULT, which I participated in recently, there is also a lot of focus on sustainability. In the current state of the building market, there is a lot that can definitely be improved. That's something we are pursuing. These events are a first step to spread this message. Energy efficiency is one key point we emphasize here, because it also has obvious economic benefits.
What about the universities and vocational schools? How important is education and outreach in promoting sustainable building practices, and what role does Xella play in this?
Education and outreach are vital. It's important to show students and professionals what actually happens in practice, beyond theoretical knowledge. At Xella, we play a significant role by engaging with educational institutions, providing practical demonstrations, and participating in industry events to spread awareness about sustainable practices. For students, it is important to have real-world examples. I spend time showcasing our materials and how they are used in projects. We also invited students from the local vocational high school for a demonstration at the plant in Zagorje, showing the whole product lifecycle and how to use the products in construction.
What makes the Slovenian market special regarding our products?
In Slovenia, only Ytong is produced, but we also import Silka and Multipor. I handle all the brands. The Slovenian market is unique because it is a burgeoning market with a lot of potential. It tends to be more traditional compared to other parts of Europe, so some of our products and solutions are still relatively new here. This traditional mindset provides a unique challenge and opportunity to introduce innovative building materials and solutions.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your role as a product manager in this industry?
The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing a project through from the initial planning stages to the final completion. Knowing that the materials we provided contributed to the success of a project after months of hard work is incredibly satisfying. I also enjoy using Slovenian building projects I was involved in, in my presentations because they feel very personal and tangible. Additionally, working with a team of experts on these projects and continuously expanding my own knowledge is very rewarding. Seeing the direct impact of our work is a great motivator.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
In my free time, I enjoy hiking, swimming, playing sports, and cooking. I also love travelling and discovering new places. Maintaining a good work-life balance is very important to me, as it allows me to stay energized and focused in my professional life.
