How artificial intelligence helps prioritize safety at Xella’s production plants

Safety has always been at the forefront in Xella’s production plants, and its production plant in Hrušovany near Brno, Czech Republic, is no exception. The plant has recently implemented a cutting-edge smart vision technology to elevate employee health protection to new heights.

19 January, 2024

Ensuring worker safety has been a cornerstone of operations at the Hrušovany plant in the Czech Republic, with ongoing initiatives to enhance safety measures for several years. Over the years, the plant has implemented numerous safety initiatives. However, a technical audit conducted in 2021 revealed areas for improvement, particularly in the secure storage of pallets in outdoor areas.

Traditional safety measures, such as light barriers, proved ineffective due to interference from insects, leaves, rain, and even strong sunlight. Moreover, frequent barrier reconfiguration due to forklift movements hampered traffic flow and posed safety risks.

A new technology for industrial safety

A solution emerged at the Amper Trade Fair in Brno, where plant managers encountered the innovative startup Invanta, specializing in "smart vision" technology for industrial safety. Invanta's proposed solution, supported by Xella's safety department, addressed the plant's specific needs."For innovative projects like this one, I greatly appreciate the support of the production team. It is this cooperation that is the key to the success with which we realize our projects in Hrušovany," emphasized Zdeněk Ovečka, Head of the Hrušovany plant.

Preventing Injuries with AI-Powered Smart Vision Technology

Invanta's solution represents a new generation of industrial safety systems powered by artificial intelligence. Leveraging "smart vision" technology, the system can detect potential hazards in real time and autonomously halt machinery to prevent accidents. It can identify a wide range of hazards, including people and objects. Machine learning enables the system to adapt and improve over time.

The implementation at the Hrušovany plant is a pilot project with carefully defined and monitored framework conditions. The solution is designed to prevent injuries or fatalities to workers by recognizing dangerous situations and reacting accordingly, such as stopping machinery completely. Xella envisions a future where the industrial environment is exceptionally safe for all workers.

An All-in-One Safety Solution

Developed as an all-in-one box, the system contains everything that is needed for the fast video analysis, recognition of dangerous situations and fast reaction. The safety system consists of an interface between the processor and the control system of the guarded machine.

Invanta's smart vision technology offers advantages over traditional safety solutions like fencing
or laser optical barriers. Its ability to distinguish between people or human body parts and the material being processed sets it apart. Additionally, the system offers space-saving benefits, recognizes human presence throughout the entire protected area, eliminates human error, and supports various extensions such as face recognition, fainting or fall detection, and personal protective equipment monitoring.

Empowering Workplace Safety with AI

Xella's adoption of Invanta's smart vision technology demonstrates the company's commitment to prioritizing employee safety. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, Xella is paving the way for a safer and more efficient industrial environment.
