We are a community that supports each other

At Xella, taking care of employees goes beyond just offering a workplace; it's about creating a support system that makes life easier. One person who plays a key role in shaping this is Miriam Reinold, who oversees pensions and benefits in Germany. We spoke with her about her role, her passion projects, and why these benefits make such a difference.

Miriam, tell us a little about your role at Xella.

I have been working in Human Resources at Xella since 2008, gaining extensive experience in both operational HR support and in a variety of HR projects I’ve been involved in. This experience allows me to understand very well the needs of our employees and the benefits they are interested in, which is valuable in my current role. Today, I am responsible for social benefits and pensions at Xella in Germany, overseeing everything we do strategically and conceptually in this area. My responsibilities include the development of policies, the design and implementation of pension schemes, as well as managing the needs of our many retirees and their pension plans. Another key aspect of my role is ensuring that our active employees have access to meaningful benefits that truly support them in different areas of their lives.

What are some of the key benefits Xella offers?

We offer a variety of benefits, with new ones being introduced over time. One of the latest additions is the JobRad program, which allows employees to lease a bike through Xella. But what’s especially close to my heart is the Xella Emergency Fund and our partnership with pme Familienservice.

Tell us a bit about the support services Xella offers.

Life can be unpredictable, and juggling work and personal responsibilities isn’t always easy. That’s why Xella provides a range of confidential support services designed to help employees manage different life situations. These include, for example:

  • Care and family support – assistance in finding childcare, emergency care solutions, and eldercare options, including consultation on home care and nursing services.
  • Financial and legal guidance – support with budgeting, financial planning, and managing unexpected financial difficulties.
  • Personal coaching – counseling on work-life balance, relationship challenges, parenting, and workplace conflicts.
  • Crisis support – professional help in difficult situations, such as dealing with grief, addiction, or emotional distress.
  • Educational resources – access to seminars and training sessions that help employees navigate different life and career stages.

All consultations are strictly confidential, and Xella covers the costs of these advisory services.  Employees also have access to a dedicated app that serves as a digital mental coach, offering support, tips, and resources for all stages of life – anytime and anywhere.

And the Xella Emergency Fund?

The Xella Emergency Fund is something I’m particularly passionate about. I helped establish it in 2018 and even contributed to drafting its charter. The idea is simple: we’re a community, and we support each other when unexpected hardships arise. The fund is jointly managed by employer and employee representatives, ensuring fair and unbureaucratic support. What makes me incredibly grateful is seeing the real impact it has; how we can step in and help colleagues who are facing tough times.
The fund is financed by employee donations. In Germany, employees can make small monthly donations directly from their salary, which Xella increases by a factor of 1.5. Employees from all countries are also invited to contribute, with Xella increasing their donations as well.

What’s your personal favorite benefit?

Without a doubt, the Xella Emergency Fund. Every time we are able to help someone through a difficult situation, it reinforces why this initiative is so important. It reminds us all that we are part of a strong and supportive community.

What would you say to employees who haven’t used these benefits yet?

I can only encourage everyone to take advantage of them! These benefits exist to make life easier, and they can provide real support when it’s needed most. Whether it’s childcare assistance, financial guidance, or the Xella Fund, there’s something here that can make a difference for everyone.
