Building Futures: How Xella Engages the Next Generation of Construction Talent

Young people are shaping the construction industry of tomorrow — and Xella is investing in their development today. Across Europe, we support universities, schools, and competitions that inspire creativity, strengthen practical skills, and connect education with the realities of modern construction.

Engaging the Next Generation Systematically and Internationally
Xella’s long-term commitment to education goes far beyond individual events. Across several European countries, we collaborate with universities, vocational schools, and regional institutions to promote creativity, hands-on learning, and technical excellence. These partnerships allow young people to experience real materials, real challenges, and real innovation.
Slovakia: Inspiring Architectural Vision
The 30th International Student Competition brought architecture students together around the challenge “A Monastery on a Pilgrimage Route.” Participants were invited to design a contemporary monastery, pilgrim accommodations, and even a small brewery along the Via Czechia pilgrimage route — thoughtfully integrating history and community needs into modern architecture. The award-winning works were exhibited at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, where visitors could explore the most creative, sensitive, and visionary approaches. By supporting this competition, Xella helps give young architects a platform for ambitious ideas and international exchange.

Germany: Turning Theory into Practice with RWTH Aachen University
At RWTH Aachen University, civil engineering students had the chance to gain hands-on experience with autoclaved aerated concrete. As part of their building materials science practical week, they erected a Ytong masonry wall under expert guidance. With Xella providing AAC blocks and thin-bed mortar, students were able to deepen their understanding of processing, accuracy, thermal performance, and material handling — an important step in connecting classroom theory with real-world construction practice.
Czech Republic: Craftsmanship, Creativity, and Confidence
For over a decade, the CRAFT SKILL competition in Vysoké Mýto has brought together apprentices from across Central Europe to test and celebrate their professional skills. This year, Xella added a new creative dimension: CRAFT ART. Children experimented with AAC offcuts, turning them into playful sculptures and discovering the material’s versatility. One art school even took materials home for future lessons and projects.
By fostering both craftsmanship and imagination, Xella supports young talent and helps position construction professions as attractive and meaningful career paths.
Romania: Sharing Knowledge with Future Engineers
More than 100 students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Cluj-Napoca joined Xella Romania for an intensive session on innovation in construction. Their energy and curiosity reaffirmed our two decades of commitment to supporting future engineering professionals in the country. Through lectures, open discussions, and expert insights, students gained a deeper understanding of modern construction materials, digitalization trends, and the importance of building quality.
Shaping the Construction Industry of Tomorrow
From hands-on workshops to architecture competitions and creative craft activities, Xella is building strong ties with young people across Europe. These initiatives reflect our conviction that the future of construction depends on openness, collaboration, and continuous learning.
And above all: it depends on the next generation — whose ideas, skills, and enthusiasm are already shaping the industry today.
