Innovation in Poland: creating value for customers

What makes people innovative? Wojciech Rogala knows all about it. As head of Innovation at Xella Poland, he faces some very special challenges.

07 June, 2023

Innovation managers have many qualities. They know their business and love change. They spot new trends faster than their competitors. And they have the patience to endure with occasional setbacks. Wojciech Rogala is one of these managers. His heart beats for technological progress that directly benefits people.

"Until I started at Xella, I couldn’t imagine how many interesting topics there were around the production of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) and calcium silicate units (CSU). At first, I thought it was just simple masonry units’ production. But because our products are used as a structure of the building as well as partitions, they are one of the most important parts of the building. That gives us the great opportunity to constantly improve it, for example in terms of on-site processing, sound insulation, energy efficiency, environmental impact, and fire protection. Our technical horizons are expanding almost every day," says Rogala. This, he says, is one of the main reasons why most of his colleagues have been with Xella for many years. "Today I am responsible for launching new products, and I feel good about learning something new every day," he adds.

Making people's lives easier

What drives the engineer in search of the next great idea? It's the practical benefits that new Xella products and technologies bring directly to the people who use them. He is particularly proud of one ongoing project: the development of an orthopaedical exoskeleton. This 'power suit' makes it easier for construction workers to carry heavy loads or move CSU blocks, for example. "We tested it even though many people in Poland had never heard of it. The devices are highly likely to be used daily, both on construction sites and in our plants. Construction workers praise us for it.
Xella Poland has also digitized the design process and completely renewed its product portfolio over the past five years. "Our large-format building elements have changed the way walls are built in Poland. Masonry erection effectiveness is significantly higher. The construction workers are less tired, walls are built faster, and its quality is better. We are the company that is known as innovative on the Polish market," Rogala says proudly. Using large-format elements is effective only in combination with BIM assembly plans. The final position of each element is known before entering the construction site gate. BIM technology that Xella Polska launched helps to reduce the number of materials lost on construction sites and allows avoiding collisions.

Learning on an international level

Good ideas don't just happen. That's why Rogala believes it's essential to share ideas with other innovation experts in the Xella Group. "In this way, we can react to emerging trends in Poland at an early stage. Today’s Western Europe market trends are likely to appear in Poland in two to three years.
Not every idea is a market winner. How does Rogala convince his colleagues to commit to a new project, even if its success is not yet guaranteed? "I think the most important thing is that you, as a team leader, believe in the innovation you are introducing and that it will work. The same is true for sales: only a salesperson who is convinced of the product can get other people excited about it."

Willingness to take risks

Another characteristic of a good innovation manager is that he or she supports the ideas of other colleagues. Even if he or she is skeptical at first. "I had this experience with a project that I am very proud of today," Rogala says. It involved developing Spider Mini Cranes to install large format systems. The custom-built Spider can install Silka Tempo and Ytong Jumbo blocks just below the ceiling. This makes it ideal for the framed constructions that dominate the Polish housing market. The crane folds in and out quickly, has the flexibility to move around the site, and even fits through a standard doorway. "To be honest, at the beginning, I didn't have a lot of faith that it would be a success. But we developed and built it. Today, it's a great help on the building sites." Furthermore, the Spider Mini Crane was also awarded the Xella Innovation Award 2021 in the Product/Solution category.
Wojciech is also passionate about the Ytong EnergoUltra+ project. "We decided to evolve monolithic solutions when the regulations for energy requirements in Poland changed. The decision in the hope of maintaining our market share at the same level was against the market trends and competitors’ activities. After all, it turned out to be one of the most important products in our range."  Rogala adds, smiling: "Our competitors didn't believe we would succeed. But now the demand is far beyond our expectations, and it makes our customers curious about our other new products".
Perseverance and a willingness to take risks are also attributes of an innovation manager who wants to deliver value to customers.

Acting sustainably

Rising energy costs are becoming a challenge in Poland. That's why it's even more important to focus on sustainable solutions. Rogala adds: "I think a lot of people have realized that, whether we like it or not, we have to change the way we think and focus on sustainable development in the construction industry. “
To come up with fresh ideas, what does the engineer do? "I have three little children. I'm a passionate piano player, and I teach at Warsaw University of Technology. It's a great mix of challenges. They help me switch off, but also get new impulses."
