Ensure quality at all levels
Every year, Xella Technologie- und Forschungsgesellschaft carries out over 7,000 tests to ensure the quality of our autoclaved aerated concrete, calcium silicate bricks, and mineral insulation boards, starting with the raw materials used and ending with the finished product.
"Every testing assignment involves varied and diverse work, as well as new aspects and challenges every day," reports Henry Hantschick, head of the Quality Management department (Accredited Testing Center and Process Engineering) at Xella Technologie- und Forschungsgesellschaft. Xella T&F has been an accredited testing center since 2011 and is responsible for the areas of quality monitoring, building materials testing, and compliance with the Construction Products Regulation for the European market. The accredited testing procedures include mechanical-technological and physical testing of building products. In this function, the quality management team led by Henry Hantschick carries out a total of 2,760 series tests per year to check, for example, the compressive strength, dry bulk density, sorption and water absorption of products. In addition, 4,500 shrinkage tests are carried out each year as part of quality monitoring.
Testing of raw materials, product properties and application
In order to carry out comprehensive quality assurance, the control of the raw materials used is already crucial. To this end, each AAC and Multipor plant at Xella receives a test plan at the beginning of each year and sends a complete set of raw materials to our research site in Brück for testing. In addition, products are taken from the plants as part of internal quality benchmarking and tested at the accredited testing center for normative specifications regarding compressive strength, bulk density, shrinkage, and thermal conductivity.
Another important aspect is the internal approval process. Prior to its use, every new raw material, whether cement, lime, sand or auxiliary material, is tested to determine if it is suitable for production according to our internal raw material requirements. Only then are products manufactured in the plant using the new raw material and afterwards tested for compliance with standards and Xella’s internal guidelines. In addition to testing physical properties, application tests are also carried out. For this purpose, walls are built, or climatic tests are conducted, among other things. In 2016, the internal approval process was started with 14 applications. In 2020, there were already 180 applications.
Quality monitoring at Xella
Quality thinking means quality assurance of our products from the raw materials used to the finished product, whether aerated concrete, calcium silicate bricks or Multipor. " We make a huge effort to ensure that our products are permanently available on the market in high quality. As the saying goes: only a satisfied customer is a good customer," Henry Hantschick summarizes.
More about quality assurance
- Starting with the raw materials We want to deliver high-grade products of consistent quality that our customers can rely on. To achieve this, we have set ourselves high standards, but we also must comply with legal requirements. In addition to many other quality assurance measures, a complete set of all raw materials used... Read more
