For 29 years, Xella Group has been promoting creativity and ideas among architecture students through its student competition to build a bridge between theory and practice. The competition is targeted at the architecture and civil engineering students, who are invited to develop solutions for future trends and practice-oriented construction projects.

Under the title “Architektur Museum München – ein Forum für Architektur im Kunstareal” (Munich Architecture Museum – an Architecture Forum for the Art District), this year’s competition was dedicated to the construction of a new architecture museum. This museum was to complement the various buildings in the Maxvorstadt art district and therefore required a sensitive approach to the neighboring historical buildings. The current canteen of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which will soon be given a new purpose anyway, served as the students’ planning object.

At a festive award ceremony on Friday evening, this year’s winners, who had been singled out from a large number of entries, were honored on the premises of TUM: the winners are Korbinian Bromme and Maria Schlüter from the Technical University of Munich. The second prize was awarded to Marius Maier from Hochschule Düsseldorf, University of Applied Sciences (HSD), while Lucas Ochmann from Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWKLeipzig) shared his third prize with Clemens Becker and Leon Dünkel from HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU). The student competition is endowed with prize money of 4,000, 3,000, and 2,000 euros, respectively.

In addition, the BIM Award for Digital Planning was presented for the first time. Here, the first prize went to Felix Reiter and Florian Hauß from Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin). Melina Rissling from Hochschule Düsseldorf, University of Applied Sciences (HSD) won the second prize, while the third prize went to  Florian Schwaighofer and Juliane Schröder from Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. The winners of the BIM Award won prize money of 2,000, 1,500, and 1,000 euros, respectively. In order to achieve the BIM goals set in the context of the competition, all relevant parts and rooms of the new architecture museum had to be modeled and described. All entries submitted dealt intensively with this extraordinary task and were of outstanding quality.

Over the past three decades, the Xella Student Competition has become a permanent feature of architecture studies in Germany. The competition will again be organized next year.
