Following the reconstruction of the plant, production restarted in November 2009, and the following year, Xella Bosnia began exporting Ytong products beyond the borders of Bosnia & Herzegovina. Since 2008, total investments have reached 35 million EUR, with further plans for expansion and production capacity improvements. We continuously strive to enhance product quality, expand our product range, and optimize our production processes. Currently, in addition to supplying the local market in Bosnia & Herzegovina, we also export to Croatia, Montenegro, and Kosovo.
At Xella Bosnia, the top priority is to manufacture products of the highest quality in the safest possible way while maintaining our leading position in the modern construction market. The motto is "Safety First", and the plant is committed to upholding this principle in every aspect of its operations. “Workplace safety remains at the core of our values - we invest continuously in safety culture, employee training, protective equipment (PPE), and process automation to ensure a secure working environment”, says Denis Mostarlić, plant manager.
But the plant is just as dedicated to improving overall product quality and sustainability. When entering the market, one of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the materials met the highest environmental standards. “Today, we remain committed to reducing energy consumption, reusing water in production as well as make use of our by-products, and minimizing raw material consumption and waste through innovative practices.”, Denis continues.
First EPD certification in Bosnia’s building industry
In early 2025, Xella Bosnia achieved a major milestone by obtaining an externally verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its Ytong products in various formats produced in our factory in Tuzla. “In compliance with the latest industry standards, we became the first company in Bosnia & Herzegovina’s construction materials sector to earn this important certification. ”The EPD is a crucial step in advancing sustainable and energy-efficient construction, providing significant benefits for investors and designers in future projects”, says Denis Mostarlić.
With a new generation of employees driving its success - 70% of the production team consists of young professionals - Xella Bosnia is proud to embrace innovation and fresh energy within its workforce. The environmentally improved production process ensures minimized harmful impact on the local community, reinforcing our commitment to long-term environmental protection.
The EPD certification is further proof of Xella Bosnia’s leadership in sustainable construction and green building practices. As an example of successful foreign investment in Bosnia & Herzegovina, it continues to demonstrate that modern technology, strong worker relations, and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand in a thriving business.
Further certifications and commitments
Xella Bosnia continuously pursues certification to comply with both local and EU regulations. In addition to strict factory production controls, the materials undergo extensive testing to verify key properties such as fire resistance, sound insulation, load-bearing capacity, and other essential characteristics. The plant received the Certificate of Conformity of Factory Production Control 1404-CPR-3552, issued by the Slovenian Civil Engineering Institute for the EU market. But the commitment of the plant does not stop with production. It also sees itself as a key member of the local community and the country’s advancements on sustainability. As a socially responsible company, Xella Bosnia actively supports conferences on energy efficiency, historical building preservation, and architectural advancements, fostering collaboration with other stakeholders, including other industry experts and university students.
