An essential element in establishing a link with the next generation: Xella’s international student competition

This year marks the 29th time that the Xella International Student Competition has awarded a winner in the Czech Republic. This edition’s winner, Tibor Greš from the STU Bratislava transformed a dilapidated amphitheater in the High Tatras into a multifunctional center. This long-standing tradition emphasizes the connection of Xella with future European architects.

28 June, 2024
The 29th Xella International Student Competition has proudly announced its winners, continuing a tradition that has proven to foster innovation and engage youth in the architectural field. Tibor Greš from the Faculty of Architecture and Design, STU Bratislava, won the top prize for his innovative proposal to convert a neglected amphitheater in the High Tatras into a multifunctional center for bad weather. Greš’s project, which emphasizes sustainability and community integration, stood out among 75 submissions from universities across Czech, Slovak, Polish, and Austrian institutions.
Breathing new life into a decaying landmark
The annual Xella competition, now in its 29th year, is renowned for supporting creative invention among university students and encouraging the development of forgotten historical sites. This year’s theme, "SCHOLÉ IN THE HIGH TATRAS – THE CENTRE OF BAD WEATHER," inspired students to propose revitalization projects that breathe new life into decaying landmarks.
The jury faced the challenging task of selecting the best projects due to the high quality and number of entries. In the end, six finalists were chosen, with the top three receiving financial rewards and the remaining finalists receiving material rewards. The competition’s focus on student participation and innovation aligns with Xella’s commitment to youth education and community development. By engaging students in practical and impactful projects, Xella fosters a connection between academic pursuits and real-world applications, contributing to both professional growth and community enrichment.
Exhibition of works
The competition works were exhibited at the Vila Flóra municipal exhibition hall in Starý Smokovec, from April to June, where visitors could view the projects and vote for their favorites until June 15, 2024. This exhibition not only showcases the students' talents but also stimulates public interest in architectural preservation and innovation. Looking ahead, the 30th Xella International Student Competition will be held in the Vysočina region, challenging students to design a monastery, accommodation for pilgrims, and a small brewery.
The consistent high participation and quality of submissions underscore the competition’s prestige and its significant role in shaping future architects and designers. Xella’s ongoing support for this initiative highlights the company’s dedication to nurturing young talent and promoting innovative solutions for community development.
